The New Year with the Patriots

It has been a very busy two weeks since the Patriots returned to school following Christmas break. Saturday, January 5th was Alumni night in the TBA gym. Many former Patriots returned to play in the basketball games against the 2012-2013 Patriots teams. Many graduates and their families came out to cheer on both teams. The more experienced Alumni teams were able to stay ahead of the younger Patriots to finish in the lead with Lady Patriots 34-21 and Varsity 72-55.

On Monday, January 7th, the Patriots traveled down to Elizabeth City, NC to face the Victory Christian Eagles. The JV boys played a good game and won 35-6. Jackson Fredericks led the scoring with 13 points. Both Lady and Varsity Patriots played hard but were a little rusty after two weeks off for Christmas vacation. Lady Patriots and Varsity both finished behind 23-42 and 35-51 respectively.

The next night, the Patriots hosted Great Hope at TBA. The Lady Patriots had big contributions from many players. Marissa Marrero scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Kaylyn Fredericks had 11 points with 9 rebounds. Brianna Chavez and Amber McGary both pulled down 9 rebounds as well. Lady Patriots finished with a big win of 37-11.

Varsity Patriots had a great game against the Great Hope Soldiers, too. Wesley Whitfield had a huge scoring game with 31 points. Matt McGary put up 11 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Isaiah Tole had 4 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The Varsity Patriots came out victorious at 54-37.

The Patriots ended their busy week with Friday games at home against Landmark. Junior Varsity guys and the Lady Patriots played tough games but had trouble scoring. JV finished with an 18-29 loss, and Ladies finished with an 8-32 loss.

The Varsity Patriots team played an exciting game against Landmark and kept the score close the whole time. Wesley Whitfield led with 27 points. Matt McGary scored 13 points and 12 rebounds. Adriel Ferrer contributed with 12 rebounds. The score was tied at the end of regulation. After a hard fought overtime period, the Patriots fell just a little bit short with 46-48. What an exciting night in the TBA gym!

The Patriots basketball teams had a break in the action this week as the junior and senior high take midterm exams. The whole school is looking forward to the upcoming Spirit Week ~ TBA style! Thanks again for all of the support from our fans! We love to see you out at the games!

Final Games of 2012

On Monday, December 17, the Patriots played their final games of the calendar year.

The JV Patriots played the varsity team from Great Hope. It was a challenging game, but the JV guys played hard the whole time. They came out after halftime and had a great 3rd quarter. Gabe Ortiz led the scoring with 10 points, and Austin Gray followed closely behind with 9 points. Final score: Patriots 27-Great Hope 54.

The Lady Patriots played the Sweethaven Lions. The game was close the entire evening with numerous lead changes. With sickness slowing down many of the starters, the girls coming off the bench did a great job filling the spots on the floor. Kaylyn Fredericks led the evening with 9 points and 11 rebounds. Amber McGary grabbed 10 rebounds, and Semiyah Ferebee was able to put up 7 points and pull down 7 rebounds. The girls fought through rough play and rough calls, but they ended the game a little short of their goal. Final score: Lady Patriots 23 – Sweethaven 28.

Great job, Patriots. Thank you again to all our fans.

May you all have a Merry Christmas remembering the birth of our wonderful Lord.

First Home Game

On Tuesday, December 11, the TBA Patriots hosted the Bethel Pilots for the first home games of the 2012-2013 season.

The JV team had a great game and soundly defeated Bethel 41-19. All the JV guys got some playing time against the Pilots. Jackson Fredericks was the high scorer of the evening with 16 points. Gabe Oritz also made a big contribution of 11 points.

The Lady Patriots struggled to score the basketball in their match against the Lady Pilots. Marissa Marrero was able to put up 10 points. All the girls coming off the bench made good contributions while they were on the court. The game ended with the Lady Patriots down 14-37. Still early in the season, the girls are looking to improve their skills and continue to work hard to improve areas of weakness in their game.

The Varsity Patriots played hard against Bethel but only had scoring contributions from a few players. Wesley Whitfield led with 20 points. Isaiah Tole added 4 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals. The final score left the Patriots down 34-53. The varsity guys will continue to practice hard and develop together as a team.

Thank you to all the Patriots fans! We appreciate your support. It is great to have everyone out to cheer us on!

TBA vs. Landmark

On Friday, December 7th, all three Patriots basketball teams traveled to Richmond to face the Landmark Warriors. TBA did not bring home any wins this time, but everyone played hard and did a great job.

The JV boys played the first game of the evening. It was a tough match, but all the boys got to play and gain some good experience. Gabe Ortiz led the team with a 16 points game. Final score left Landmark ahead 22-40.

The Lady Patriots played a great game and stuck with their opponent almost the entire game. Midway through the 3rd quarter, the score board showed only a 4 point difference. The girls got a little tired and the other team racked up some fast break points to end the game with a 18-40 Lady Patriots loss. The girls did well and played a hard fought game.

The Varsity Patriots played hard and kept the game close the whole evening. Kevin Labre severely jammed his finger early in the first half and was not able to play much the rest of the game. CJ Rivers came off the bench to give help where needed. Wesley Whitfield again led his team with 28 points. The Patriots played a great match, but when the final buzzer sounded, the Patriots were still down 38-40.

Good job, Patriots. Great games on the road!

First Games of the Season

On Tuesday, December 4, the 2012-2013 Patriots’ basketball season officially began. The varsity teams traveled to Great Hope for a great opening night. The Lady Patriots got off to a bit of a slow start, but went in to half time with a 16-6 lead. All eleven players worked hard and did their part on the court. Kaylyn Fredericks led the team with 11 points, and Marissa Marrero also made a big contribution with 10 points. Semiyah Ferebee led the way in rebounds with 21 total, and Amber McGary recorded 13 rebounds in her first varsity game. The girls finished well and ended the game with a 26-14 victory.

The guys’ team also started out understandably slowly for their first game. They fought hard and pulled ahead. All the guys got to play and worked hard on the court. Wesley Whitfield led the team with a career high 42 points. Matthew McGary also had an outstanding game with 20 points and 11 rebounds. They also grabbed 6 steals apiece. The Varsity Patriots finished with a resounding 72-55 win.

What a great start to the season. Way to go Patriots!!!!

The End of the Varsity Regular Season

Last night marked the end of the regular season games for the Patriots in Varsity Volleyball and Soccer.  Both teams finished with exciting wins to send them into the ODACS playoffs.

The soccer guys were thankful that the early morning rain stopped so they could play.  Thankfully the field dried out a little bit before their 4:00 start.  The Patriots recorded a resounding victory with a score of 8-0.  Multiple players scored one goal including David Parsons, Matthew McGary, Adriel Ferrer, and Noah Wells.  Jacob Phillips and Gabe Ortiz scored two goals each in the shut-out.  The Soldiers from Great Hope did a great job and worked hard right along side our Patriots.  Congratulations to the guys on their victory!

The Varsity Volleyball team played a hard-fought match that went out to the full five sets for the first time this season.  All of the girls contributed to the win over the five sets.  It was an extremely exciting game to watch!  The girls lost the first set 18-25.  Then they won the second and third sets 25-17 and 25-16.  They fell short in the fourth set with a score of 17-25 which forced a fifth and deciding set.  The Lady Patriots rose to the challenge and won by a 15-8 margin.  Briana Chavez had a serving run that really got the girls going in the second set!  Great job, Lady Patriots!

The JV Lady Patriots also played last night.  They were so close in the first set, but fell short by two points leaving the score 23-25.  The second set was a little tougher for the Lady Patriots, but each girl gave her best and honored the Lord even in a loss.  There were some great volleys between the teams in both sets, which proves that all the JV girls are improving in their skills.

The JV Lady Patriots have their final game on Thursday here at Tabernacle against Sweethaven with game time at 4:00.  Come cheer on the JV Lady Patriots as they finish their season!

We now await the ODACS standings for the soccer and volleyball tournaments.  We will keep you posted as to where each team falls and for the games that will be scheduled for the end of next week.  Come out and cheer on the teams as we seek to advance in these playoff rounds.

Busy Week for the Patriots!

On Tuesday, the Patriots started out the week with varsity soccer and volleyball games across town against Gateway. The soccer team worked hard and played a good game, but the final score left Gateway winning 4-0.

The volleyball team played a great game with marked improvement after Friday night’s tough loss. The girls had good team work and fought hard but lost in three sets. Final scores were as follows: 14-25, 15-25, 15-25.

Thursday night, the Varsity volleyball team played Commonwealth. Each girl got some playing time and all contributed to the victory. Feeling the absence of a couple of the starters, the team fought through a few rough patches. Elizabeth Peterson, the back-up setter, took charge and led the team to a much-needed victory!  Final scores for the sets were 25-22, 25-21, 26-28, 25-18.

Please join us at home on Friday night as all three teams compete against Landmark. Wear pink and help us honor all those who have fought their battle with breast cancer. Games start at 4:30!  See you there!

Another Friday Night on the Road

Last night, the Patriots traveled to Hampton to play Bethel.  We all enjoyed the fellowship with our friends from across the water and had a good night of competition as well.

The Varsity volleyball team had an off-night and struggled to execute their offense effectively, but as the game progressed things got better.  They finished the match with a much improved third set.  Nights like these remind us that we need  to keep working and preparing for each game and learn from the losses as they happen.  Final scores for the sets were 11-25, 10-25, 16-25.

The JV volleyball team played another good match against the Lady Pilots with close games in all three sets.  Dayun Shin served for the game winning play in the second set.  All the girls played well, and it is evident that each one is improving her skills.  The final scores for their match were 17-25, 26-24, 7-15.

The soccer team played a tight game with Bethel in this second meeting during the season.  There was only one goal scored at the end of the first half leaving the final score at 1-0 in favor of the Bethel Pilots.  Mr. McGary said that our guys had great ball control and took some good shots on the goal, but they just couldn’t find the back of the net last night.  It was a great effort by the Patriots, and we hope that the guys get some much-needed rest over the weekend after some very physically demanding games this week.

Next week holds three varsity volleyball matches on Tuesday at Gateway, Thursday against Commonwealth at home, and Friday against Landmark at home; only one JV match at home on Friday against Landmark; and two soccer games at Gateway on Tuesday and against Landmark at home on Friday.  Pray for our athletes this weekend and this week that they would stay healthy as we anticipate a busy week to come.  Thanks for your support!  GO PATRIOTS!!!!!

New Heights for the Soccer Team!!!!

Tonight, we had our first home game in quite a while.  It was good to be back on our gym floor and out on our soccer field representing the Patriots and the Victory Christian Eagles from Elizabeth City, NC.

The JV team lost their game tonight in 2 sets, but each group of girls on the floor played hard and gave it their all.  The JV coaches are excited to see the up and coming talent for the varsity team in the years ahead!  Final scores were 18-25 and 16-25.   Keep working hard, JV Lady Patriots!

The varsity volleyball team played an amazing match tonight!  There were some really exciting and long volleys between the two teams.  The girls did a great job at communicating with their teammates both on the court and from the sidelines!  Even with a loss in the books this evening, the Varsity Lady Patriots have made HUGE improvements in their game over the last few matches!  Coach Baker and Coach Peterson were pleased with the 110% effort from the whole team this evening! Final scores of the three sets were as follows: 8-25, 13-25, 17-25.  Great job tonight, Ladies!

The news highlight of the evening come from the soccer team!  Our Patriots defeated the Eagles tonight 3-2 in a hard-fought game.  The first half ended with the Patriots up 2-1 after Matthew McGary scored 2 goals.  One of the goals was tipped in off the keeper’s gloves from a corner kick, and the other was dropped right over the goalie’s hands and into the net on a beautifully executed play that our guys learned at the soccer camp they attended in August!  After Matthew McGary scored once more in the second half, the Eagles kept working to catch up.  They scored only once more in the second half even though they took numerous shots on the goal making the final score for tonight’s game 3-2 in favor of our Patriots!

This is a big win for our guys!  With a 3-2 winning record, the guys have accumulated more wins in this season than any season over at least the last seven years.  It is even more exciting to think that we still have FOUR MORE GAMES to play before the state tournament!  We look forward to what all three teams will be able to do with the remainder of the season.

Thanks again for supporting your Patriots!  Come across the HRBT to Bethel Baptist School in Hampton and watch all three teams play on Friday night at 4:00.  GO PATRIOTS!!!!
